TRIATHLON BOOT CAMP FOR BEGINNERS

MARCH 28-30, 2008

WHO IS THE CAMP FOR?

Triathlon Boot Camp for Beginners is a comprehensive three-day clinic and training camp for individuals who are new to the sport, as well as those with some experience who may want a refresher on the basics.  The Camp provides a comprehensive introduction to the sport in a supportive, non-intimidating environment.  Those with more experience should consider our Triathlon Boot Camp for Experienced Athletes.

WHERE IS THE CAMP HELD?

Triathlon Boot Camp for Beginners takes place in historic Southeastern Pennsylvania. The Camp is conveniently located just minutes from Center City Philadelphia and less than two hours by car from both Baltimore and New York City along the I-95 corridor.  The classroom and pool sessions will be held at the state-of-the-art Healthplex Sports Club in Springfield, PA (www.healthplex.net). The group rides and runs will traverse the rolling countryside and horse farms throughout Delaware and Chester counties and wind through historic estates along the Main Line.

WHAT TOPICS WILL BE COVERED?

Topics to be covered during the classroom time include:

Designing an effective training program;

Introduction to training with a heart rate monitor;

Training and race-day nutrition strategies;

Open water swimming;

Bicycle maintenance and repair;

Proper bike fit;

Cycling technique, handling and drills;

Running technique and drills;

Bike-to-run transition practice;

Overview of USA Triathlon rules of competition;

Equipment selection;

Strength training and injury prevention

There will also be an open forum/panel discussion where camp participants will have the opportunity to ask questions in a friendly, informal environment.

As part of the registration fee, camp participants will have the opportunity to have their swim stroke videotaped and analyzed by expert coaches using above- and below-water video cameras in an Endless Pools Fastlane swimming machine.  Camp participants will receive a videotape of the analysis to take home.

HOW MUCH TRAINING WILL I DO?

The amount of training is really up to you.  There will be one key bike session and one key run session during camp hours which we encourage everyone to participate in.  However, there will also be several additional opportunities for swimming, biking and running throughout the weekend.  These sessions will be entirely optional and will be scheduled before and after the formal camp hours.

For the key bike session on Saturday, you may choose between a 25- and 35-mile loop on rolling terrain.  For the key run session on Sunday, you may choose between 4-, 6-, 7- and 9-mile loops on similar terrain.  Cue sheets, fully-stocked rest stops and support vehicles will be provided for all loops. Several groups will be formed based on ability and fitness levels.  These sessions are intended to be easy, aerobic efforts.  Don’t be concerned about not being able to keep up.  NO ONE gets dropped during these sessions.  There will be plenty of others riding and running at your speed!!
